Elohim Our Creator

» by in: LIFE

In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).

Before time began, God exists. In the Bible He has many names that describe His character—names He has chosen to give Himself so that we may begin to see and understand the fullness of His matchless power and glory.

“El” is a being having supernatural powers and in Hebrew is the generic title for any god by whatever names such gods may be called. But the Creator of all things and Author of the Bible has a unique name: It is “Elohim”, the plural form of “El”.

English translations hide three truths from our view that are clearly revealed in His Hebrew name. The first is that “Elohim” speaks of His Supreme Power, to be feared and worshiped by believers but dreaded by His enemies and those who would deny that He exists. The divine character of God is revealed in the first sentence of the Bible where His supreme power and the glorious majesty of our Creator are emphasized in His name.

The second meaning of His name suggests a plurality of persons in Elohim that are separate, yet one in essence: The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. No one has ever seen the Father since He is Spirit and lives in unapproachable light; for human eyes to see Him would mean instant death.

The third picture of Elohim is of Light, Life, and Love. Since He is the source of all three and we are made in His image, His intention for us is that we should reflect His glory.

Hear Him then as He speaks to us from His Word in Proverbs 30:5-6 (NIV):

5Every word of Elohim is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
